What Not To Keep In The Refrigerator?

What not to keep in the refrigerator?

Most people treat their refrigerator as the perfect place to store all kinds of food. However, this is a serious mistake, as  not all products benefit from the low temperature and conditions in the refrigerator. Sometimes these conditions can accelerate the decomposition process or alter the natural taste of the food.

It is true that many food products need to be kept in a cool place, as this extends their useful life, but it should be remembered that there is a group of products that can simply be harmful to the conditions in the refrigerator  . Below is a list of sub-products that should not be kept in the refrigerator under any circumstances

What not to keep in the refrigerator?

Tomato

Refrigerated tomatoes lose their flavor and turn bland. Low temperature inhibits their maturation and disturbs the internal structure, which makes them floury.

Potatoes

Low temperature negatively affects the taste of potatoes: under its influence, the  starch turns into sugar, which makes them sweet.  To keep them fresh longer and to slow down the decomposition process, you can store them in paper bags.

Bread

Bread is one of the most common foods we put in the refrigerator and should never be there. Contrary to appearances, bread in the refrigerator   ages faster and loses its taste. It’s definitely better to store it in another dry and cool place, and if necessary, you can slice it up and freeze it to be eaten later.

Tropical fruit

As these are fruits from warm climates, low temperatures are unlikely to suit them. By storing fruits such as pineapple, watermelon, peach, avocado or banana in the refrigerator , you only speed up their decomposition process.

Onions and garlic

In cold conditions, onions and garlic become hard,  losing their nutritional value and taste. It is much better to store them in a dark, dry and cool place, for example in a linen bag.

Hard cheeses

It has been assumed that cheeses should be kept in the refrigerator because then they stay fresh longer. However, it should not be forgotten that a lot depends on the type of cheese and that for some of them the conditions in the refrigerator take away the taste. Hard cheeses like Parmesan do not need to be kept in a cool place. All they need is a sealed package and room temperature.

Melons and peaches

By storing them at a temperature below 10 degrees Celsius, you risk losing their taste and many nutritional values. Therefore, it is much better to leave them outside the refrigerator at room temperature.

Bee honey

Are you hiding honey in the fridge? This is a serious mistake. Honey, due to the ingredients it contains and its pH, retains the best consistency when stored at room temperature. At low temperature, it loses many of its properties and crystallizes.

olive oil

When kept in the refrigerator, the oil becomes thick. It gradually becomes more like butter and loses its flavor. It is best to keep it in a cool and dark place, but definitely not in a refrigerator.

Chocolate

When the chocolate is stored at low temperatures for a long time, a white coating appears on the chocolate, which also affects the taste. In the case of chocolate, it is worth inclining towards the compromise which is room temperature, because too much heat does not have a positive effect on it.

Coffee

Coffee stored in the refrigerator behaves very much like chocolate. It also becomes covered with a flavor that changes the taste and loses its characteristic smell.

Grains, pasta, flour and sugar

All these products should be stored at room temperature. When it is cooler, they lose their nutritional value, vitamins, texture and taste.

Some cold cuts

Some types of ham have a very distinctive flavor that can easily be lost when refrigerated. Contrary to ordinary cold cuts, which are served by low temperatures, hams do much better at room temperature.

Basil

Basil should also not be placed in the refrigerator, because the low temperature dries it out and accelerates the decomposition process. However, if you want to use its ability to absorb other odors, put it in a glass of water to extend its life.

We hope that this text and the knowledge it contains will help you avoid the mistake of storing food in the refrigerator that should never be there.
